Erik yearns

So, friends, what DID I mean when I said "I'm the Nazz"? And should that question mark be inside the quotation marks?

O.K., If you're not going to tell your virtual friends, I will: "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" by David Bowie.

I will give the answer in a few days, after seeing what (if) other folks put. But who are you up there? Please sign comments. Like this:

I see two good choices:

Gary Numan's - Critics
"You could say I'm pretentious,
You could say I'm the nazz,
You could hail me as the new king of it all..."

http://www.rhapsody.com/garynuman/theplan/critics/lyrics.html

Lord Buckley's - The Nazz
"...But I'm gonna put a cat on you ...
was the coolest, grooviest, swingin'est, wailin'est,
strumminest, swingin'est cat that ever stomped on this jumpin' green sphere.
And they called dis here cat ... Da Nazz! "

Should the question mark be inside the "quotation marks"?

Doesn't this look "silly?"

Does this look "sillier"?

The second way always looked right to me, but good ol' Mrs. Wilson from 10th grade might say otherwise.

Who else out there was in that class?

Putting the question mark inside the quotes is illogical, but it looks better to us because of our conditioning.

I'm sure that the Modern Language Association must perform some useful functions, but, in my humble opinion, dictating that punctuation marks be put inside of quotation marks, even when they're not actually part of the quote, isn't one of them.

I didn't have Mrs. Wilson in 10th grade. I had that other, nice lady...I can't remember her name, but she was nice. I think it started with an M?

I always learned to put the punctuation inside the quotation marks. I believe that's MLA style. As with all style issues--as opposed to grammar issues--it depends which style you prefer. I think most of us grew up primarily using MLA style, so that's the most comfortable.

As to the Nazz, I have no clue.

Nice research, Jay. I hadn't found the Gary Numan reference in the brief research I did. And of course (thanks to Wikipedia) we all know that Lord Buckley's Nazz is the Nazarene.

Also not mentioned at all was the band Nazz, featuring Todd Rundgren. I've never heard them. Or Lord Buckley. Or the Yardbirds song. Please send files of any if you have.

(by the way, Jay, I just got the crotch joke. cute)

ANYWAY, much to my chagrin (i didn't even know I had chagrin), it is the ubiquitous, clever and ANONYMOUS commenter who had me figured out. Of course, i'm surprised that you didn't put the next line..

"He was the Nazz,
with God-given ass."

For some reason I always assume the anonymous is a woman. It was once Tommy Meade, at least in part. This one, I have no idea. A Bowie fan?

So there you have it, Erik, that's where I got it. From Ziggy.

And as for you xooijl, I know it's fun to watch me squirm, but.....

So, the meaning of your post title for December 13, 2007, was to convey that Lisa Whiteman did the exposé on you as a tribute to the divinity of your buttocks.

Cheers, Erik.

For what?

And who do you think is our anonymous contest winner? 'Twould be a shame if they didn't claim the prize.

And how about that MLA-snubbing use of "they" as a gender-neutral, third-person singular pronoun?

What?!?! A prize!?!?
(Does the punctuation effectively capture the mood).

Oh, Good Ol' Mrs. Wilson escaped, and has a 6+ year head start on us...

I found this today:

May 1, 2001 - Congratulations on a job well done to those English teachers who are retiring at the end of the school year: Arline Gershberg, Stoneman Douglas High School; Gloria McCoy, Stranahan High School; and Cindy Wilson, Taravella High School.
