Moving towards some sort of truth telling

I've been wanting to make this space a confessional for so so so so so long... but, like I said, the timing just ain't right.

I dunno.
Here's a few facts:

- I am going to the Ukraine for Rosh Hashana, to the grave of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov. Me and 25,000 other dudes

- When I arrived in Israel 2 weeks ago, I began eating vegetarian again. It's the first time since my brief revolt against all forms of human violence that began September 11, 2001, and lasted about a month.

- I eat too much. Vegetarian or not.

- I feel lonely as hell. A lot.

- I am surrounded by good folks, who are my friends, and I have a mentor who believes in me, no matter how bitchy and lame and despairing I get.

- The Hebrew word for vegetarian is tzimchoni which, literally, is more like "plantetarian."

- I have some bad habits that I am trying to break.

- I haven't gotten any damn mail from anyone.

- I am damn cute.

[i had posted a few pictures up here, but they seem to have vanished]

There are few sins greater than vegetarianism...the is not the Stu that conquered B-more with me.

I'm concerned. Do you want to talk about this?

I'm with Stu on this one. When I went back to the cow & chicken 14 years ago after a couple years away I said to myself, what's the big deal, eating meat in moderation isn't like buying shares in factory farming - I'll only buy the organic, relatively humane stuff. But it hasn't worked out that way at all - I eat meat with nearly every meal, over 1/2 the time in unscrupulous restaurants. Besides which, meat, humane or otherwise, just uses way, way too much energy - 13 pounds of grain = 1 pound of cow. So I applaud the move, and hope I'll muster the will to follow suit.

Man, i used to love the old Patrick & The Raulersons tunes! One of my favorites is, "This Hair was Made fer Lovin'"

Anyway Pat, if you can't pass muster as a vegetarian, at least you can pass the mustard-- this steamed cabbage is kinda bland..

(i just got it! in fact, i am right now listening to Antony & The Johnsons)

On Vegetarianism--A quote from Isaac Bashevis Singer's novel "Shosha":

"...The same blood-spattered walls, the hens and roosters going to their deaths shrieking with the same voices: "What have I done to deserver this? Murderers!" Evening had fallen and the harsh light of the lamps reflected off the slaughterer's blades. Women pushed forward, each with her fowl. Porters loaded baskets with dead birds and carried them off to the pluckers. This hell made mockery of all blather about humanism. I had long considered becoming a vegetarian and at that moment I swore never again to touch a piece of meat or fish."

I am sure it sounds even better in yiddish.

Wow. who'da thunk that a single line about vegetarianism would generate this wonderful thread.

But I digress: You guys are still missing something here. To be truly ehtical you should be VEGAN. After all, the dairy industry feeds into the meat industry. Disclosure: Simon is not vegan! His wife is.
