This stuff is truly heart-rending. And meanwhile, some Israeli monster had to go and kill random Palestinians as an attempt to stop the disengagement/expulsion. Stupid. Let them be the terrorists...
Thanks to Mobius for the link on Jewschool to this enormous photo archive. And for those of you aspiring Jewish hipsters, take note that the 2 top Jew-Cool sites, jewschool and jewlicious, are both deep deep with coverage of this most difficult and sorrowful time. To wit- real cool has substance behind it. That is to say, you won't find coverage of the disengagement/expulsion at Heeb.

Wasn't it Spock, in Star Trek II, who famously says "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Doesn't that apply in this example. If the expulsion of the settlers leads to a lasting peace, won't it be worth this short term pain? Can't these settlers be looked at as displaying the ultimate selfishness. Putting themselves before the good of the whole? Just wondering how you see it...
um-- if they believe that GOd wants them there, and only through being on the Land will the final redemption of the Jewish people come, and if religious Jews believe, somewhat Judeocentrically, albeit pretty inclusively compared to many other cultures, that their redemption leads to the redemption of all humanity, than it isn't, to them, a selfish matter.
furthermore, there is little indication that this will lead to a "lasting peace." perhaps you missed the photos of our cousins burning flags in celebration... check the newest post for more Palestinian peace tendencies. Now what I tell myself is that YES, 20 years from now, it will be that much easier to deal with the situation with those Jews not in that place. But that is like chopping off an itchy arm just in case it turns into cancer (or maybe that metaphor sucks-- it does).
I mean to say that there is no direct link between this expulsion and a movement towards peace. If peace requires both sides to make sacrfices and understand the needs of the other, then these hateful revelries in Gaza, and the fun slogans about taking Jerusalem and then Tel Aviv don't really seem like real peacemaking. more like Sharon is fed up, and doesn't want to deal with them. PUll out the Jews, and build a wall. Obviously, since Sharon is caging them in like animals, he isn't looking for such a lasting peace.
DID YOU GET MY BIRTHDAY ECARD OR WHAT??
by the way-- Spock was an emotionless prick. COld rationality always has neat solutions-- genocide is a nice one. Trying to think of an example of throwing it all away for one person. The MAtrix 3 comes to mind, but that movie stinks.
you know I am a big fan of emotionless pricks...
